The whole process typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on the size and location of the cavity. Most patients return to normal activities immediately afterward.
For the first 24 hours, avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on the side where the filling was placed—this gives the material time to fully set and reduces the risk of dislodging it. If your filling is composite resin, it sets immediately with the curing light, so recovery is fast. Some mild sensitivity to temperature is normal for a few days.
Let your dentist know about any medications you’re currently taking, any allergies—especially to local anaesthetics or metals—and whether you’re pregnant. This information helps us select the right materials and approach for your situation.
Longevity depends on the material and your oral hygiene habits. Composite resin fillings typically last 7–10 years; amalgam fillings can last 10–15 years or more. Ceramic fillings may last longer with proper care. Regular check-ups allow us to monitor the condition of existing fillings and replace them before they fail.
Not necessarily. Amalgam fillings that are intact, not cracked, and not causing issues don’t need to be replaced.
